Rich Hil Interview

Growing up in the “stuck-up neighborhood” of Glenville, CT, Rich Hil’s penchant for individuality manifested itself at an early age. “I’ve always been the black sheep of the family and the whole area,” he admits. “As soon as I realized what public school was, I made them switch me. Yeah, I got beat up in school. Yeah, I was a loser. Now, because I can say that, I made it cool.”
The precocious songwriter began writing and recording tracks at 13, learning swagger from Philly rap stalwarts like Beanie Sigel and Philly’s Most Wanted and prolificacy from 50 Cent. “I would just lock myself in a room for hours studying the same rap until I felt I knew it,” recalls Hil.
He quickly got the attention of über-producer Swizz Beatz, who produced tracks for Hil’s first group and took him on his first tour. It was as hype man for the producer, and as a performer in his own right, that Hil learned the performance side of the game, a trait that has metastasized into the performer’s current setup with a live band.
The maturation process has been quick since those early days. Nowadays, Hil ( a recent Warner Bros. signee) hasn’t touched a pen for a while, allowing the music and his instinct to decide the topic, flow and vocal melody. The result is a steady barrage of music that incorporates Hil’s mix of raspy crooning and rapping with an emotional, sometimes brutal, directness that recalls the best of Lil Wayne. “I don’t talk about money, fame or power,” admits the emcee. “It’s strictly vulnerability and the fun I have is stuff I take to ease that vulnerability.” When D & D caught up with him, we discussed his career thus far, what he's got coming up, and being Fat Trel's favorite artist to collaborate with.

5 Minutes WIth Big KRIT

Big K.R.I.T.It is rare to find an artist who has both age and wisdom on his side. At just 25 years-old, Big K.R.I.T. possesses the musical intuition of an old soul. Hailing from Meridian, Mississippi, K.R.I.T. (born Justin Scott) grew up listening to early rhythm and blues records in his Grandmother's house, and later went on to discover songs by revered soul artists like Curtis Mayfield, Willie Hutch and Bobby Womack. It's easy to detect these artists and rap legends who have influenced the young MC like 8Ball & MJG, UGK, Scarface and OutKast in K.R.I.T.'s own music which masterfully resurrects the rich heritage of Southern hip-hop in the 1990's.
"I'm reintroducing a type of sound from the South that a lot of the newer generation doesn't know about and reminding the older generation of what Southern hip-hop used to sound like," explains K.R.I.T., whose stage name is an acronym for King Remembered In Time. "I was influenced by the third coast as far as Texas, Tennessee, and Atlanta so I was really trying to put all those sounds that I grew up listening to together to make a sound for myself."
Big K.R.I.T. is the sole producer of his Cinematic/Def Jam Records debut album, Live From The Underground which serves as a testament to his multifaceted musical talent and overall artistic vision. His major label debut is being released on the heels of two critically acclaimed independent releases, K.R.I.T. Wuz Here (2010) and returnof4eva (2011) which featured Ludacris, David Banner and Bun B. In addition to receiving starred reviews from Pitchfork and Complex, K.R.I.T.'s growing popularity earned him a spot on the cover of XXL's Freshman cover in February of 2011 placing him amongst the industry's most promising newcomers.
When we sat down with him the afternoon before the Red Bull EMsee Challenge D.C., we were again impressed by how  humble and personable KRIT is. We chopped it up on an assortment of topics, including whether Pimp C get's his just due as a lyricist, David Banner, and if he'd listened to more Bone or Wu.

Mannie Fresh Lecture @ Red Bull Music Academy

With a record catalog long enough to fill an encyclopedia, Mannie Fresh has basically been the sound of New Orleans hip hop for the past 25 years: producing hits for Nola staples like Lil Wayne, Juvenile, BG, Big Tymers, and bounce queen Cheeky Blakk among others. In addition, his marching drum snare rolls and 808-heavy production trademarks have been picked up on and incorporated in the dirty south canon at large. In this lecture, hosted by Cocaineblunts' Andrew Noz, he touches on everything from his humble beginnings with local MC, Gregory D, to the Cash Money heyday, and his more recent approach to DJing and production.
