Angel Haze - The Voice E.P. (Review)

by Mike Andrews
@MikeAndrews89
If Nicki Minaj is the “female Weezy”, then meet Angel Haze, the female Drake.
Her latest mixtape, “Voice EP”, explores the bitterness and depression of a heartbroken girl over a lot of the beats that Drake and Kanye have spit on.

The opening (“Heart”) and closing (“Smile”) songs of the mixtape are done in spoken-word fashion over emotionally driven piano riffs. The first track immediately shows that Angel is not just a rapper, but a gifted poet, as well.

The weird thing about this mixtape is that Angel finds a way to appeal not only to the heartbroken girls, but she finds a way to make a note with the fellas, too.
The Drake covers allow her to lean on her spoken-word strengths, especially on “Look What You’ve Done” and “Practice (Live It Up)”. With a nasally rapping voice, she stands out on the slow tracks, but there’s something hidden on that voice that would have been nice to hear more…
Speaking on past relationships, money problems and breaking hearts, Angel not only raps through the mixtape, but has a beautiful singing voice, too. The girl has an immense amount of talent that is impossible to eclipse all on one mixtape.
One thing she does manage to do is prove that she can hang with the tough guys as she spits a raucous flow over “No Church in the Wild”. For some reason, after all the emotionally driven songs, it doesn’t sound unbelievable to be sending threats over Kanye’s “Theraflu” beat. “This game has just been sodomized/You even dream of beating me, you wake up and apologize, bitch”
Her crossover appeal is undeniable, she has something for every person on this planet. But there’s one quality about her that makes her so likable. After the closing track, “Smile”, you realize that you could fall in love with this girl.
She’s independent but still wants someone to lie with at the end of the night. She’s stubborn, but knows when to admit her mistakes. She comes off as a tough girl, but still dreams of a fairy tale ending.
Oh, and she can rap, sing and spit poetry?
I hate to make it sound as if I’m reducing her down to nothing but a “perfect catch”, but I don’t mean it in a negative way. A female rapper with the ability to catch not only the attention, but also the feelings, of a male listener is someone who is manipulating the way the game is played.
And for Angel Haze, more hard work and continued honesty as seen on “Voice EP” is going to play off well for her and hopefully get her on the airwaves, soon.
Rating: 8/10
Key Tracks: “Heart”, “Smile”, “No Church in the Wild”

New York Post Columnist Labels ESPN "Hypocrites" For Working W/ Nas

On April 8, the New York Posts' Phil Mushnick had this to say "Wait a second. ESPN recently suspended anchor Max Bretos for innocently saying “chink in the armor” when referencing Jeremy Lin. Yet, last week ESPN issued a press release proudly announcing that it has hired “Hip-Hop Superstar Nas” to provide music for ESPN’s NFL Draft coverage.
Check out Nas’s lyrics on the Internet. I randomly stumbled upon “Ether.” Even by standard gangsta garbage — “F” this and that, loaded with references to black men as “N----s” and the sexual degradation of young women, homophobic rants, odes to assault weapons and drugs — Nas’s “artistry” is sub-human.
Check it out for yourself. And no accidental or innocents slips of his tongue, such as “chink in the armor.”
I challenge any ESPN or Disney executive to publicly recite the lyrics of Ether, written and performed by Nas, then as publicly state, “Yep, he’s just the guy for us!”
And why does ESPN feel that its NFL Draft coverage needs to be covered by any music, let alone choosing a professional creep? Because he’s popular? So is crack.
In a sports world gone nuts, ESPN is, in fact, the worldwide leader."
